Camera Critters - Nestlings

While I was busy in the yard this week, I had several opportunities to check on the blue jay nestlings. And yesterday, when all the work was finally done, I rewarded myself with a photo session.

There are two young blue jays in this nest. One huddles close to the tree and seems almost shy. The other one looks around, wide-eyed. He frequently stands on the edge of the nest and fluffs himself up. (I say "he" but, of course, they are marked exactly the same. Something about the boldness of this little bird makes me think of it as male.) Perhaps one is a few days older than the other.

One thing is certain: this nest is getting crowded, especially when the mother is sitting in it, too.

Hi Adrienne, Thanks for stopping by my blog. My header picture is on a trail that's about a five minute drive from my house in northern UT, the Flume Trail. I have a few posts with pictures about that favorite place of mine.

I like your pictures! I was wondering how you get them to post that large. I clicked the "large" button on the template but they don't come up that big.

Thanks.

Thanks for the loading tip. I'm not sure I can handle more manipulation of pics right now. We're getting ready for another trip to Wyoming and I want to finish uploading all the Yellowstone pics, but maybe in the future I'll try it with flickr.

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me!
How neat, Adrienne.. We have bluejays also--and they are at the feeders frequently. I don't know where their nest(s) are... We have a wooded lot next to our house--and most of the birds probably nest in it.

Great photos of your jays.
Hugs,
Betsy

Quite amazing that you can get so closed to the nest. Great shot. Thanks for visiting our blog. I did not use tripod, it was taken using the nikon 80-400 VR lens. VR did work.

Blue jay babies in Ohio. First time to your blog. You have been busy. Jack and I have been down the gall bladder operation road. Not fun. Where in Ohio are you. I was born in Shelby County Ohio.

I am a first-year volunteer w/NJ Fish & Wildlife & have been monitoring GBHeron rookeries in my county. Last weekend, I witnessed first flights for several, which pretty much brought me to my knees. New life is always amazing, regardless of whose life it is!
