Daddy Long-Legs

Okay, for you squeamish readers of mine, you have been duly warned by the title.  :)
My children have heard somewhere that Daddy Long-Legs are the most poisonous spiders on Earth, but not dangerous to humans because their mouthparts are too small to bite human flesh.  “Where did you hear that?” I asked.  Henry claims Megan read it in a book, but I think it’s just one of those stories that gets repeated by kids so many times that they all just start to believe its really factual.
The critters they’re referring to are called Harvestmen, and they aren’t even spiders, though they do belong to the arachnid family.  You’ll notice from the photograph that the body and head both are part of one oval structure.  That’s just one thing that distinguishes them from spiders which have a distinctly separate head (or cephalothorax to be specific) and abdomen.  You’ll also notice that the harvestman has one pair of eyes, where spiders usually have eight eyes.*

And not only do harvestman NOT have hollow fangs for inflicting bites, they do not have venom-producing glands either.
Now, I can say all this to my kids, but what I really need to do is find and record the episode of Mythbusters in which this urban legend is Busted.  They’ll believe anything those guys say!

Those eyes are cool!

*Most spiders have eight eyes, but there are some species that have six, four, or even zero eyes.  (This is something new I learned just today.)  What have you learned today?

What great shots. I have never heard this Urban Legend and have never been afraid of a Daddy Long-legs. They don't even creep me out like some spiders do.
Fascinating information about them Adrienne.

I learned about Harvestmen today, thanks to you! Now I know what to call them when I scoop them up in my hand to place them gently in the flower bed!

Very interesting! I'm glad I know that now!! Thanks for visiting my blog!

I'm always freaked out by granddaddy long legs...spiders that loose legs shouldn't be able to keep going!

Funny you should post about Harvestmen! They kids just told me about them this past week! My son read about them in a bug book a friend gave him for Christmas!! Spiders do not bother me, though I don't like them in my house. I will throw out GDLong legs, smash others! :) I have a very nice photo of a Grandaddy Long Legs I took in the woods last summer! I'll have to share it with you some time.

Great post! I learned that daddy long legs do not have venom. I thought they did, too. I enjoy seeing them in my garden. They seem to like it here.

I like your photo of the pretty horse, too.
Adrienne: Neat capture of the Daddy Long-legs. They do eat aphids and are a beneficial critter.

Hmph. My dad has told me that Daddy Long Legs are the most poisonous, but can't bite too. Since he's very knowledgable about nature and animals, I'm surprised he was wrong.

I've heard that about the venom, too. Maybe they are two different things. The things I call daddy long legs looks different to that.

I think that is a different daddy longlegs than we have here. It has been ages since I have looked closely at one. I will have to remedy that situation. Interesting info, btw!
Yeah - as much as I love how the camera brings things into clarity and focus - spiders/spider looking bugs - as interesting as they are - are still something that makes me squirm. But, great photo's, great info too. I love to learn new things!

I'm having an Intelligent Expressions giveaway - if you are interested!
