Daddy Long-Legs
Okay, for you squeamish readers of mine, you have been duly warned by the title. :)
My children have heard somewhere that Daddy Long-Legs are the most poisonous spiders on Earth, but not dangerous to humans because their mouthparts are too small to bite human flesh. “Where did you hear that?” I asked. Henry claims Megan read it in a book, but I think it’s just one of those stories that gets repeated by kids so many times that they all just start to believe its really factual.
The critters they’re referring to are called Harvestmen, and they aren’t even spiders, though they do belong to the arachnid family. You’ll notice from the photograph that the body and head both are part of one oval structure. That’s just one thing that distinguishes them from spiders which have a distinctly separate head (or cephalothorax to be specific) and abdomen. You’ll also notice that the harvestman has one pair of eyes, where spiders usually have eight eyes.*
And not only do harvestman NOT have hollow fangs for inflicting bites, they do not have venom-producing glands either.
Now, I can say all this to my kids, but what I really need to do is find and record the episode of Mythbusters in which this urban legend is Busted. They’ll believe anything those guys say!
*Most spiders have eight eyes, but there are some species that have six, four, or even zero eyes. (This is something new I learned just today.) What have you learned today?

Fascinating information about them Adrienne.
I love your new blog style. I have been messing with the new templates too. One of these days I will decide on one I like best!
Take care!!!

I'm always freaked out by granddaddy long legs...spiders that loose legs shouldn't be able to keep going!
