How Will You Celebrate?

Forty years ago, some people got together to raise awareness about conservation of our global residence, this planet we all call “Home.”  They called it Earth Day.  Earth Day was a result of a growing concern during the 60’s that we were not looking out for our planet.  From that first Earth Day in 1970, we have seen the formation of the EPA, the passing of the Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act and others designed to make our planet a healthier, safer place for all its inhabitants.  And making things better in the present is really a secondary goal.  Environmentalists would argue that they want to save the worlds ecosystems for the sake of our children.  If we teach them to be responsible now, they will have a cleaner, sustainable future for as long as God allows the Earth to remain.
The Senegalese minister of agriculture said it best:
"For in the end, we will conserve only that which we love; we will love only that which we understand; and we will understand only that which we have been taught."  --Baba Dioum

So how will you celebrate Earth Day this year?   Perhaps you think you are already doing all you can personally do.  You’ve switched to reusable grocery bags, started using a refillable water bottle, began separating recyclables from your trash.  Maybe you even changed all your light bulbs to those compact fluorescent kind.  Those are all great, easy ways to make a difference. What else can you do?
We had a home energy audit done today.  The contractor pinpointed a few areas where we need to increase insulation and seal ductwork.  Not only will we use less energy, but also we will stay more comfortable as our furnace and central air work more efficiently. We will save money on heating and cooling costs as well.
We will be planting a tree this year as in some years past.  We also will participate in cleaning up litter in and around our stream.  And we will be turning off the lights for at least one extra hour in support of Earth Day.
Because the Earth is beautiful, because God gave it to us, and because He entrusted us to care for it.

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.  ~Native American Proverb

On April 22, we'll be out in nature searching for some new waterfalls... How's that for celebrating Earth Day???

Glad you will be planting a tree, cleaning up the litter, and turning off the lights. Good for you!!!!

Amen!

Pergola will be finished this week and then I'll begin the replanting of the garden after the damage done this last winter ... more trees! Probably off to the gulf sometime next month with garbage bags to collect the *stuff* ... always visit the beach with a garbage bag (so sad).

I think I'll plant a tree too, and (weather permitting) I'll, of course, spend some one-on-one time with nature.

An energy audit won't work in our house right now. It has been in a constant state of construction since we moved here and is far from finished.

Home energy audits are very revealing! We had one in January, fixed a few things and are now waiting for them to come back and see if we can do more to our home.

Reusable bags are very common here and recyclable trash is a must in my community. We changed the light bulbs a couple of years ago. BUT I just know there are tons more we can do!

Remember the original home energy audits? We had spent some considerable amount of time and money doing what I thought we needed to do to save energy.

And then the government came out with this deal where you could replace this and that for a break on taxes and we did those things as well.

There isn't any thing we can do now that would make a difference.

Well, there is one thing I have long advocated but my wife disagrees with me. Since we grew up in the days of outside toilets I said that we could either pee outside or pee at least twice in the toilet and only waste drinking water flushing it once instead of every time. I liked the idea of peeing outback but she didn't.

I know the next world war will be fought over drinking water and the Great Lakes will be the first to be put up for auction. And to protect it the government will have to go to war. Imagine that.

I love your blog! Beautiful thoughts. I chose not to celebrate Earth Day as every day is earth day for me. I did hang my laundry out, as I usually do, but that was Friday. Oops, I just remembered, it is still out there!
Thank you for visiting My Muskoka !

I stopped by to see if you had an iheartfaces entry, but enjoyed this more. I too feel like God gave this beautiful place to us and I do try to make wise choices, not only for me, but for my children's children. At least until we get to heaven.... :-)

Wow. Such a great post Adrienne. I love it. Do you know, somehow, I didn't remember it was Earth day until it was about 11:00 pm so we didn't do anything that day but we did do some things to make the world a better place on the weekend.

I am so glad God gave us this beautiful world.
