Today’s Flower – Ironweed

tall purple wildflower photo by Adrienne in Ohio
Found throughout Ohio, Ironweed (Vernonia altissima) is in full bloom here in NE Ohio from August until the frost.  Its name refers to the strong red stems that can grow to over 7 feet tall.  Preferring moderately damp soil, it is found most often in meadows or fertile pastures.  This one was growing at the edge of the woods at Mohican Lodge.

Good morning Adrienne. I think iron weed is so pretty. It sure makes an old field pop with color. They stand up to their names because they are such a sturdy stemmed plant.

...I love these plants. I'm going to try to add them to my garden. I used to think they were Joe-Pye Weeds. From everything I've read, seems like the Joe-Pye Weed is lighter or more pink.
Beautiful Adrienne. I love that color. Bet it looks pretty all over your area this time of year.

How's hubby?
Hugs,
Betsy

We here in Wisconsin also have a lot of ironwood weed that is just coming into full bloom. We also have Ironwood trees; and a town named Ironwood just to the northeast of us. Thank you for sharing.

Kelly, I don't know much about them other than what I found in the field guide. I've heard of Joe-Pye Weed, but I'm not sure I know what it looks like. I think these would make a stunning addition to a garden, particularly in front of our privacy fence in the back. I've also thought of planting some common milkweed, but I'm not sure if it would become invasive.

Betsy, Jeff had chemo last Thursday and has been feeling pretty crummy (is that a word?). Praying he feels better soon. Thanks for asking. ☺

RE: to the question you left on my blog about what coreopsis I had pictured ~ I believe it is called Moonbeam. I sure do like it ~ it holds it's blooms for a long time.

I see it when I was able to be out and about but do not have it here at home.

I came over from Angies blog. LOVE this photo, outstanding! I am planning on getting some ironweed for my backyard, it is always mushy and wet from the swamp that lives behind my house and visits during every rainfall.
