Camera Critters - Great Backyard Bird Count

I'm curious to know how many of you, my blogging friends, participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count last weekend. It was my first time, and while I didn't have huge numbers to submit, I still enjoyed myself.

The first day, my efforts were spoiled by the neighbor cat. The weather wasn't the prettiest on Saturday either. But I did have good counting sessions on Sunday and Monday. In all I counted 16 different species over the four days.

I was pleased to see one of my favorites, the red-bellied woodpecker, as well as a pair of white-breasted nuthatches that weekend. They visit the feeders, but not daily, and I wondered if they would come and be counted.

There are lots of other great photos of animals over at Camera Critters.

I didn't participate but have enjoyed hearing about it. I am a novice 'birder' and hopefully if they have it next year I will know enough to join in. In the meantime I am still having fun learning. This is a beautiful photo and thanks for stopping by my CC post. Much appreciated.

The red feathers are so brilliant, love the photo. I usually participate in the German equivalent, Hour of the Garden Birds, but it's not until April or May. It's always fun.

He is quite handsome...I didn't participate in the count. I wouldn't get but maybe 8 or 10 here. When it gets warmer I want to use my husbands hunting blind and set up outside by the feeder to see what kind of pictures I can capture.

Great picture of a woodpecker.

We didn't participate, maybe next time.

I'm thinking of learning more about birds. It would be a great companion to the geocaching I do out in the woods. We generally see lots of birds during our outings.
Adrienne: What a great bird count for 4 days and it was a neat woodpecker capture.

So beautiful. There was another post of a red bellied woodpecker today. I love the striking orange/red tones even within the eyes. Thanks for the great capture!

Your photo is gorgeous Adrienne! Wowza.

I'm not a birdwatcher and didn't participate in the count. You are making me want to become a birdwatcher though!
I adore woodpeckers but we have none on the island. Beautiful catch.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. You asked about the whip spider: I saw a picture of one in a book and thought that it was the most alien looking creature I had ever seen. I bought him and another one at a herp expo because I have a thing for weird pets ;)

You take some great images. I find birds are so hard to photograph... so congrats on this image.

This Aussie didn't even know about the backyard bird count. I imagine it was just for US residents anyway??? I'd be able to count a number of birds in my backyard.

One thing that I never understand... why they continue to fly at the windows. You'd think that once they had one hit to the head, they would know not to do that anymore. The cats love to watch them from inside - they even duck as it somehow the bird will come through the glass ;)

Hi, Manz. Always good of you to stop by. :) The GBBC is, indeed, for the US, but Australia may have an equivalent. Ours is co-sponsored by Cornell University and the Audubon Society.

As far as them flying into the window, they continue to do it because it reflects and appears to be the sky or open yard. You can put up a clingy silhouette that looks like a bird of prey to discourage that. Of course, if the birds are flying into the window near a feeder, the clingy would discourage them from feeding, too. You should probably just move the feeder a bit further away.
