Bluebirds for Christmas Eve

I was doing the breakfast dishes on Christmas Eve and glanced out the window at the bird feeders.  I noticed this bluish bird on the thistle feeder.  Its back was to me, and I thought “That’s a strange-looking tufted titmouse.”  It took a minute to register that this blue bird with the rusty breast was in fact an Eastern Bluebird.  “In December?” I thought.
And just I was I staring at it in disbelief, a female arrived on the other feeder.  And another.  And then another male.
What an exciting day!  Here’s hoping they remember the location of my yard and visit again.
Bluebirds are considered to be partially migratory, following their food source.  As long as food is available, and they have shelter from cold and ice, they will stay put.  Fierce competition from other resident birds can also prompt migration.  I have heard of bluebirds staying year-round in milder winters, but in my experience with them, they left, and  always returned to my yard in March.
I bought some mealworms today and another bluebird house.  I intend to be ready.

What a FABULOUS Christmas present! There are areas here that have them all year round but I have never had them in my yard :( I need to visit the local park and see a few. It is really COLD here so I haven't been out much!

....ohhh! How wonderful. I hope they stay. The mealworms should help. Recently, my Carolina Wren has started eating the mealworms I put out. He's the only taker so far! I would love to look out and see a swarm of bluebirds! Wishing you the best in the coming new year...
My Bluebirds have been here this week also, Adrienne. They had been gone from the feeders since early Fall... BUT--now that it's cold, they are BACK. Mine look just like yours. I'll post pictures this week.

How's hubby???
Prayers and Love,
Betsy

How wonderful Adrienne. I have two houses now adding another one this fall. I am hoping to get more to my yard. I have never tried meal worms, does this work in the winter?

What a wonderful Christmas surprise! I love Bluebirds - they are so pretty.
I see the bluebirds you were talking about in your comment on my CC post. They are beauties! I don't know how often sparrows kill bluebirds, but from what I've read, it's when a bluebird is in a birdhouse, and the sparrow wants to take it over. I've also read, and noticed this as well, that the male sparrow chooses the same place each season for nest building. We get a nest outside our bedroom window next to the air conditioner every year. If you are just getting sparrows for the first time, you may want to do a search to find out how to discourage them. There are devices you can put on your feeders to keep them away. I just read that the other day. I think it's too late for us.

Wow! How beautiful. What a great Christmas gift :) We don't even have these birds when they are "in season." We do get to see them at nearby parks, though.
How are you doing?
